Matthias Lillienthal

Biography

Matthias Lilienthal (1959, Berlin) is a dramaturge and theatre director. He studied theatre studies, history and German philology. In 1986/87 he worked as a freelance journalist and interned with Achim Freyer at the Burgtheater in Vienna. From 1988 to 1991 he was dramaturge at the Basel Theatre under director Frank Baumbauer. Between 1991 and 1998, he held the position of chief dramaturge and deputy artistic director at Frank Castorf's Berlin Volksbühne theatre, which he played a key role in shaping. In 2002, he was programme director of the two-year festival ‘Theater der Welt’ in Bonn, Düsseldorf, Cologne and Duisburg, for which he conceived, among other things, the theatre tour format ‘X-Wohnungen’, which was later resumed in various cities. In 2003, Lilienthal took over the three Kreuzberg theatres Hebbel-Theater, Theater am Halleschen Ufer and Theater am Ufer as artistic director and managing director and merged them to form the three-theatre combine Hebbel am Ufer (HAU). From 2015 to 2020, he was the artistic director of the Münchner Kammerspiele.
