John Zorn: Sacred Music for Two Guitars

Description
“Music should be like a journey to the moon, transcendence, a rocket.” For more than 50 years, John Zorn has celebrated and developed genres as diverse as jazz, rock, hardcore, speed metal, blues, Jewish music and (contemporary) classical music in hundreds of concerts and thousands of recordings. Since 1992, Radical Jewish Culture has been a major focus of his work and also a focus of his label Tzadik. Of central importance for Radical Jewish Culture was the premiere of Zorn’s composition “Kristallnacht”, whose title refers to the November pogroms of 1938.
“I compose music for my friends,” says John Zorn. These friends are artists who, without exception, fulfil the four requirements for good music according to Zorn’s analysis: honesty, skill, imagination, catharsis.
In Zorn’s music, only the present counts, and at the same time he creates the present full of references to music history – from Hildegard von Bingen to most recent times. Zorn works with a whole compendium of spiritual and mystical references, from the Kabbalah to Christian saints, the occult, Tarot and others from the oracle department. Some of his musical friends, such as Kenny Wollesen, have been playing his music for 40 years. Top performers from an immensely broad spectrum, including classical music stars like Barbara Hannigan, belong to his inner circle. “I have created my own system,” explains Zorn. All best friends. And all, without exception, irreplaceable
