The Pielachtal
a picturesque cultural landscape in the Mostviertel region
The Pielachtal, which is just a stone’s throw from St. Pölten, offers a change from everyday life. This place is a real gem for anyone who loves nature and outdoor activities, perfect for hikes or a variety of day trips.
The Pielachtal is known above all for the Dirndln. This is not referring to the traditional clothing, but the unique cornelian cherries. The bright red wild fruits are not only a symbol of the multifaceted cultural landscape here, but also play a key role in events: In addition to Dirndl harvest hikes in September, guided walks with the Pielachtal nature mediators throughout the Dirndl blossom season offer interesting insights into the diversity of the “Dirndl Valley”, as the region is often affectionately called. The Pielachtal Dirndlkirtag and the “Dirndl Valley Experience Weeks” provide an authentic insight into the multifaceted world of the Dirndl as well as local craftsmanship and culture.
Another attraction in the Pielachtal is Austria’s longest narrow-gauge railway: the Mariazellerbahn has been running through the valley for over 125 years. It provides a comfortable and environmentally friendly journey from St. Pölten to Mariazell, one of Austria’s most important places of pilgrimage, and back. Thanks to the numerous stops in the Pielachtal, the various events of the Pielachtal cultural region are also easily accessible by train.
